OARN Brand Video
OARN supports, strengthens, and develops Oregon’s network of independent Relief Nurseries to maximize family resilience and prevent the abuse and neglect of young children.
For most people who are unfamiliar with the concept of relief nurseries, this video was positioned to help inform and encourage people to support OARN.
We developed a live-action and animation approach to look through an empathetic lens: feeling what loving, struggling parents feel while trying to provide for their young children, free from judgment.

Live action footage from Getty Images
After getting the rough animation feeling good, I cleaned up in Adobe Photoshop.
I used flat colors at this point.
I began with rough animation in Adobe Animate. I took reference of myself holding a “baby” (a plushie of Pikachu) and putting it down.
Finally, I composited the clip with the live-action background, and added a gradient to the characters to better match OARN’s wonderful gradient.
Pre-Production
I started by plotting out the live-action footage we received from Getty Images. I roughly drew out the basic shots from the animated sections so we had clear indicators of pacing.
Due to the importance of diversity in relief nurseries, I met with my team and OARN to make sure we had appropriate representation in our footage. I knew OARN was incredibly knowledgeable about this, so I made sure to take good notes and be very thoughtful about each clip.
